Before heading out to give a commencement speech to the United States Air Force Academy, Donald Trump told a group of reporters outside the White House that he did not order the Navy to move the USS John McCain away from his view during his state visit to Japan.
Trump is quoted as saying to the press, “I don’t know what happened. I wasn’t involve. I would not have done that.”
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that the White House ordered the Navy to move the USS John McCain away from Donald Trump’s view during his state visit to Japan.
Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan was asked about the report in which CNN quoted him as saying that he, “never would dishonor the memory of Senator McCain…nor disrespect the young men and women that crew the ship.”
The Navy Chief of Information tweeted out a statement after reports surfaced that a tarp was used in order to hide John McCain’s name from Donald Trump’s view.
The late Senator John McCain (R-AZ) had a strained relationship with Donald Trump that began during the 2016 Republican Presidential Primary. McCain commented that Trump was disparaging Mexican immigrants in order to “fire up the crazies.”
After hearing McCain’s comments, Trump said that he had no respect for McCain because he was "captured" during Vietnam.
It must be noted that Donald Trump, who came from a wealthy family, did not serve his country during the Vietnam War due to “bone spurs.”
Despite calls from former top military brass and some Republicans for Trump to apologize, he never did.
Trump’s refusal to apologize created a an irreparable rift between him and the late senator which played out during the vote on the Senate floor to abolish the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).
With the Yeas and the Nays votes tied at 50, the late Senator John McCain stood on the Senate floor and gave a thumbs down; officially ending any chances of Congress abolishing Obamacare.
John McCain’s decision to vote with the Democrats and his two fellow Republicans, Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), to keep Obamacare hit Donald Trump at his core because it showed Trump up to not be the great negotiator he proclaims to be.
Yesterday, while speaking with the press, Trump admitted that healthcare, as well as McCain’s support for the 2002 Iraq War, is why he dislikes the late senator.
Trump said to the press, “I was very angry with John McCain because he killed healthcare. I was not a big fan of John McCain in any way shape or form. I think John McCain had a lot to getting President Bush, a lot to do with it, to go into the Middle East; which was a catastrophe.”
After the story broke, the late senator’s daughter, Megan McCain, tweeted out:
